Electronic voting not possible in upcoming general elections, declares CJP
ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan remarked on Thursday that enforcement of electronic voting system for the upcoming elections in Pakistan was impossible.

The bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar resumed hearing of a petition filed in 2012 by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief, Imran Khan. The cricketer-turned-politician had also asked for the removal of alleged bogus votes from the voter lists issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

During the hearing, PTI’s counsel pleaded that an electronic voting system in the general elections should be implemented, however, Justice Nisar stated that it would be impossible to apply the electronic voting system in such a short duration as there was not much time in the forthcoming polls.

“An experimental phase to test the electronic voting system was necessary,” remarked the top judge.

Main Saqib Nisar also observed that the petition will now be taken up after the upcoming general election, ordering the registrar to fix the next hearing accordingly.
