Former Law Minister Zahid Hamid withdraws from upcoming general elections

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker and former law minister Zahid Hamid has announced that he will not contest the upcoming general elections.

Hamid made the remarks as he expressed his views on the recently announced budget on the floor of the house.

“I was elected as a member of the National Assembly (MNA) thrice but I have now decided that my son will contest elections,” Hamid said on Friday.

The lawmaker continued that after a thorough probe, it was confirmed that he had no role in the controversial amendment regarding the Finality of Prophethood declaration, in Election Act 2017.

“Raja Zafarul Haq report into the incident was submitted in the Islamabad High Court which was satisfied with the report. Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi clarified that I had no role in the entire episode,” Hamid asserted.

Zahid Hamid had tendered his resignation as law minister in November last year in the wake of protests by a religious party at Islamabad’s Faizabad interchange.

The resignation was tendered in line with the agreement, brokered by a senior officer of Pak Army Major General Faiz Hameed, according to which the government released the detained workers of Tehreek e Labbaik Pakistan.
