Pakistani court questions govt over military trial of Imran Khan

RAWALPINDI – Islamabad High Court (IHC) asked Attorney General’s Office for clarification regarding potential military trial of PTI founder Imran Khan during hearing on petition aimed at preventing possible military custody and trial of former prime minister.

Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb inquired about possibility of military trial for cricketer turned politician who faces charges linked to the riots on May 9. The court also called upon Assistant Attorney General Azmat Bashir Tarar to address these concerns.

Justice emphasized that the Attorney General’s Office needs to provide a clear explanation to the court.

Imran Khan’s lawyer raised concerns about the possibility of a military trial, in wake of current detentions. Justice Aurangzeb allowed Bhandari to reference statements made by senior government and military figures.

The court also postponed the hearing pending further clarification from the Attorney General’s Office.

The court Registrar’s Office approved Khan’s petition to block any military custody and trial, scheduling it for a hearing with some objections.

In his petition, former PM highlighted reports suggesting he might be moved to military custody over the May 9 events. The outspoken politician also asked the court to ensure he remains under civilian jurisdiction and to prevent any military detention.

Despite being behind bars for over a year, Imran Khan remains a key figure in Pakistani politics. He was not allowed to contest February general election, but his party continues to influence the political landscape.

Former PM is facing over 170 legal cases, which he claims are politically motivated. Despite his legal battles and recent arrests, he retains significant support, as evidenced by widespread protests following his removal and arrest.
