KUALA LUMPUR – Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been hospitalised again due to health issues.
Reports said the 99-year-old Mahathir was admitted to the hospital yesterday due to an infection in his respiratory tract, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The former premier also has a heart condition and has undergone surgeries in the past. He was last hospitalized in July. Due to his health problems, Mahathir was unable to appear in court for a defamation case he filed.
Mahathir served as Malaysia PM for the first time from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020, making him the longest-serving prime minister in history of the country.
An aide of Mahathir told international media he was hospitalised on Tuesday evening for coughing due to a lower respiratory tract infection, and would be on medical leave until October 25.
