Huawei set to launch first 5G smartphone

SHENZHEN – Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has announced to launch its first 5G-enabled smartphone in 2019.

The announcement was made at a summit hosted in Shenzhen on Tuesday.

The company’s rotating Chairman, Eric Xu, also announced the company will launch an end-to-end 5G solution in the second half of 2018.

Huawei is working on its 5G chipset, which will not be included in the company’s own products but also in a number of other smartphones in future, as this China-based company is amongst the leaders when it comes to networking equipment, 5G included.

Previously, the company had announced its 5G modem Balong 5G01 will be able to deliver a bandwidth of 2.3Gbps at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February this year.

The Balong 5G01 chip was made for mobile hot-spots and self-driving cars, and not the smartphones, as it is not exactly that small.

The smartphone brand is yet to confirm any specifics in regards to the new handset, including what it will be called. Considering support for the new networks will initially be reserved for flagship devices, though, it seems likely that 5G network modems could debut in next year’s Mate line.
