Is saying Ramazan Mubarak Bidah or Sunnah? Dr Zakir Naik has an answer

LAHORE – Many Muslims around the globe are observing the Holy Month of Ramazan with reverence, however, many of them have a query in their minds that whether wishing ‘Ramazan Mubarik is Sunnah or Bidah (innovation in religious matters).

According to religious scholar Dr Zakir Naik, to congratulate Ramazan by saying “Ramazan Mubarak” is not Bidah as our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) used to inform the people about this blessed month.

According to the references cited by Zakir, in the light of Hadith  (Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2, page 230, hadith 7148, repeated in Sunan Al Nasai), the last prophet used to announce the start of the month.

“O people the blessed month of Ramadan is approaching you and Allah (SWT) has prescribed you to fast in this month.”

Zakir, who is widely known for his sermons and religious teachings confirmed that it was good to call the month, a blessed month.

“According to me [Zakir] it is not a bidah (innovation). It is good they are calling this month a blessed month. What word you choose is mubah (optional) like in Indian subcontinent people say Ramazan Mubarak; in Gulf countries, people call it Ramazan Karim. So all these words are good, holy month, the blessed month. So people should wish each other and remind each other of this blessed month,” Said Dr Zakir Naik.

Ramazan Mubarak is mostly said in Indian sub-continent, by the Indians and Pakistanis but many of the scholars cast aspirations regarding the religious status of the prayer.

Word ‘Mubarak’ means ‘barakat’ (blessing) as it is actually an Arabic word but when used by Indians or Pakistanis, it is a type of congratulation.

So when Ramazan comes, they say; Ramazan Mubarak.
