DUBAI – Bollywood legend Sridevi passed away on Saturday night at the age of 54 after a massive cardiac arrest, confirmed her brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor.
The well-loved actress was in the UAE to attend the wedding ceremony of actor Mohit Marwah. She was with her husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi at the time of her death. Sridevi’s other daughter Jahnvi was unable to be in Dubai due to her shooting schedule.
Boney Kapoor’s brother, actor-turned-producer Sanjay Kapoor, told Indian Express: “Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. I just landed here, I was in Dubai and now I am flying back to Dubai. It happened roughly around 11.00-11.30. I don’t know more details yet.”
Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan on 13 August 1963, Sridevi began her acting career as a child artiste, making her Bollywood debut in 1975 in the film Julie at the age of 12. She went on to establish herself in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films before returning to Hindi films in 1979 with the film Solva Sawan. She continued to win over audiences with her acting and dancing skills in blockbusters including Chandni, Lamhe, Mr India and Nagina in the 90’s, establishing her position as one of India’s top female superstars of all time. She took a break from Bollywood in 1997, following which she tried her hand at the small screen, but returned to the silver screen with a bang in her comeback film, the critically acclaimed English Vinglish, in 2012.
She was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri, in 2013, for her services to Indian cinema.
Sridevi’s last film appearance was in 2017 film MOM opposite Pakistani actors Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali.
She is survived by husband Boney Kapoor, and daughters Khushi and Janhvi Kapoor.
