Mashal Khan s father challenges acquittal of suspects

ISLAMABAD – Mashal Khan’s father submitted appeals against the special Anti-Terrorism court (ATC) judgment in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Saturday.

Muhammad Iqbal Khan submitted pleas through advocates Fazal Khan, Muhammad Ayaz, Shahab Khattak and barrister Amirullah Khan challenging all those court decisions in which Imran Ali (who was given awarded death penalty by the ATC in Abbottabad) has been acquitted.

Mashal’s father asked for the increase of his punishment citing sections of the law.

He also challenged the acquittal of 26 accused asking for their convictions and punishments. Iqbal pleaded that the acquittals will set a negative example for the youth of Pakistan and these appeals were filed to reinstate the writ of law.

Iqbal added that there was clear evidence available against acquitted students emphasising that the five convicts who were awarded life imprisonment by the ATC judge, should have been given capital punishment.

The petitioner also asked for the conviction and punishment of 25 persons, who were given four years of punishment by the ATC judge. Iqbal’s counsel believes that there was ample evidence available against them as they gathered in the form of an illegal mob with the common intention to kill Mashal Khan.

Meanwhile, Aimal Iqbal Khan, Mashal’s brother, sought capital punishment for all the accused. Moreover, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s appeal for enhancement of punishment has already been submitted against the ATC’s verdict.

“This is the most important case because the future of all the students and youth of the country is connected to it,” said Muhammad Iqbal while talking to media after submitting appeals.

Talking about appeal already filed by the KP government, lawyer Shahab Khattak said that government had its own responsibility but the community members were the vanguards of justice.
