Anti-polio drive begins in Punjab, Sindh, KP and Balochistan

LAHORE – A three-day anti-polio campaign is underway in twelve districts of Punjab, 26 districts of Sindh, twenty-five districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and twenty-one districts of Balochistan.

All age polio vaccination campaign has also started on Pak-Afghan border at Torkham to eradicate circulation of polio virus between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A four-day polio campaign also started in Larkana district from today.

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a crippling childhood disease caused by the polio virus and preventable through immunisation. Affecting mostly children under the age of five, polio — which has no cure and can only be prevented by giving a child multiple vaccine doses — can lead to irreversible paralysis.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, that suffers from endemic polio, a virus that can cause paralysis or death.
