Top opposition party terms India s participation in OIC as diplomatic faux pas

NEW DELHI – Indian National Congress, the main Opposition party in the South Asian country, has termed the country’s participation in the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) meeting at Abu Dhabi a diplomatic faux pas.

Addressing a news conference in New Delhi on Monday, the party’s spokesperson Manish Tewari said that the OIC adopted a resolution that supported Pakistan on Kashmir issue and labeled India a terrorist state and an occupier in Jammu and Kashmir.

“What happened in Abu Dhabi is extremely disturbing for India and every citizen of the country. The OIC passed the resolution in which they condemn in the strongest possible terms recent wave of ‘Indian terrorism’ in occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He went on and asked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Minister Sushma Swaraj “Is this your diplomatic achievement that you got India labelled as a terrorist state. Is this your great diplomatic achievement that you go to OIC meeting and lend legitimacy to them?”

“There is a reason why India has deliberately chosen to ignore these meeting.

“You went and got a resolution that states India as a terrorist state. The OIC appeals to other member states and Islamic institutions to provide humanitarian aid to Kashmiri people,” he added.

“Are we not capable of looking after our people?” he further said, adding that the Indian national government sold its national interest in Abu Dhabi.

In a resolution adopted by the 46th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Abu Dhabi, the OIC member states reiterated that Jammu & Kashmir remains the core dispute between Pakistan and India and its resolution is indispensable for the dream for peace in South Asia.

The OIC resolution condemned in the strongest terms the recent wave of Indian terrorism in occupied Kashmir and expressed deep concern over the atrocities and human rights violations in the held valley.

It reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Kashmiri people in their just cause and reminded the international community of its obligation to ensure implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on the dispute.

Separately, the top Islamic bloc negotiated and unanimously adopted 50-point Abu Dhabi Declaration, which “called upon the Indian government to rebuild the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya”.

India and Pakistan came to the brink of war last week as tensions escalated following the Feb 14 suicide car bombing that killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police in Indian-occupied Kashmir. India accusing Pakistan of harbouring the Jaish-e Mohammad group behind the attack, which Islamabad denied.

The two nuclear-armed countries then engaged in an air battle and India lost jets in it after carrying out an air strike on what it said was a camp of Jaish-e-Mohammad, considered a terrorist group both by India and Pakistan.

Pakistan also captured Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman after his MiG-21 fighter jet was shot down during a dogfight near the Line of Control (LoC) on February 27. He was released by Islamabad on Friday night as a “peace gesture”.

While India has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants and having a “direct hand” in the incident, Pakistan, in turn, has rejected the allegations, accusing India of being responsible for human rights violations taking place in Kashmir.
