KARACHI -Markhor, the national animal of Pakistan has been declared as an endangered species due to its extinction because of hunting and climate factors.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) red list for threatened species, an internationally recognized tool for measuring the conservation status of species, puts Markhor in the near threatened category as their number has dwindled to below 10,000.
Keeping in mind the alarming situation, Pakistani celebrity Gohar Rasheed has shared a video creating awareness about the Markhor extinction in collaboration with the ace designers Deepak and Fahad.

Markhor is protected by local and international laws such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites).
In a Feb 2018 brief to a parliamentary committee, the Ministry of Climate Change said that the trophy hunting of markhor in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan and Azad Kashmir was a success story in Pakistan, as local communities conserve the animal and international hunters pay large sums for obtaining shooting licences.
Up to 80 per cent of the money generated from issuing Markhor hunting permits is shared with the local community, which works to prevent illegal hunting of the animal.
The government of Pakistan should take strict measures preventing the hunting the national animal of Pakistan. It’s time we should start taking care of the living creatures especially wildlife otherwise the world Eco-system will collapse affecting not only animals but us too and we will be responsible for it.
