KP s DG NAB booked for torturing subordinate accused of bribe-taking

PESHAWAR (Web Desk) – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on Tuesday against provincial Director General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Shehzad Saleem for allegedly torturing a subordinate accused of receiving a bribe.

On May 12, a two-member bench of Peshawar High Court ordered the registration of an FIR against Mr Shehzad Saleem and Investigation Officer Muhammad Umair Butt in three days.

The officials have been accused of torturing another NAB employee, Sardar Gul Khitab, while he was in legal custody on the allegations of receiving a bribe of Rs. 200,000 from a municipal officer named Mehbub Ali in Abbottabad.

Advocate Sardar Ali Raza filed a petition in PHC in the first week of May, alleging that the suspect was being tortured by NAB officials during custody.

Accepting the plea, the court ordered NAB officials to produce latest medical reports of the accused, which confirmed the incidence of torture.

Announcing the verdict, Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth and Justice Musarrat Hilali ruled that an FIR should be registered for a cognizable offence against the officials who tortured the accused in custody. Police have also been directed to thoroughly investigate the matter and pursue the case at relevant forums.
