England on Thursday announced their squad for opening two Tests of the three-match home series against Pakistan, with several notable changes due to injuries, recalls and the team’s new leadership. Jordan Cox has been handed one of the biggest opportunities of his career after being named England’s new No. 3 batter.

The move comes after Jacob Bethell was ruled out with a right knee injury sustained during England’s ODI series against India. Although Bethell was initially expected to recover in time, the medical team has decided he needs a longer rehabilitation period.

Cox made his Test debut against New Zealand earlier this summer and is now set to occupy one of the most important positions in England’s batting order. Dan Lawrence is back in England’s Test squad after an impressive County Championship campaign with Surrey. The 28-year-old has scored 788 runs this season at an average of 65.66, including five first-class centuries.
Besides strengthening the middle order, Lawrence’s off-spin gives England another bowling option following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket. Pakistan series marks the beginning of a new chapter for England cricket. Stephen Fleming has overseen his first squad selection as England’s new head coach, working alongside interim coach Marcus Trescothick.
Trescothick will remain in charge during the Pakistan series before Fleming officially assumes full-time coaching duties. Joe Root starts his second stint as England’s Test captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement.
He was originally due to make his Test debut in New Zealand in 2024 but suffered a broken finger during training just before the opening match. That injury opened the door for Jacob Bethell, who impressed at No. 3. Now, with Bethell sidelined, Cox finally gets his chance to establish himself in the same position.
