Russia blocks China s social media app WeChat

MOSCOW – Russia’s telecoms watchdog has blocked China’s WeChat, the popular social media app developed by Tencent Holdings by putting its name of the list of prohibited websites, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) said on Saturday, citing information posted on the Russian regulator’s website.

Watchdog Roskomnadzor shared the information on its website on Friday, the newspaper said, adding that Chinese tech giant Tencent was aware of the action and taking up the issue with Russian authorities to resolve it.

The South China Morning Post said the app was blocked following Article 15.4 of the law on information, information technologies, and information security, according to Roskomnadzor.

The authorities took action after the company failed to discharge the various responsibilities regarding information distribution on the internet, the newspaper stated.

Social media applications such as Facebook and Twitter are also prohibited in China.
