Sri Lankan cricket team likely to visit Pakistan this year

ISLAMABAD – The Sri Lankan cricket team is expected to visit Pakistan later this year following the improvement in security situation across the country.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official while talking to APP confirmed that the Sri Lankan cricket team is expected to tour Pakistan in November or December.

“Our Sri Lankan counterparts have expressed willingness in sending their team to Pakistan as the security situation is improving in the country,” he said.

He stated that Sri Lankan team would be playing ODIs and Twenty20s against Pakistan team which would be staged only in Lahore.

“The world had witnessed the type of security that was provided in the high-profile Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) final at Lahore. PSL final had proved a great breakthrough in reviving international cricket in Pakistan,” he said.

He said World XI team would also be touring Pakistan in September which also includes foreign players from Australia, West Indies, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Apart from the PCB official, chairman Pakistan Cricket Board Shehreyar Khan also divulged that Sri Lankan team was expected to visit Pakistan.

“During the ICC meeting, Sri Lankan officials appreciated the security situation and expressed their consent to send their team for few matches in Pakistan,” he said.

While talking to leading daily Nawa-e-Waqt, Khan said that Sri Lankan officials called security arrangements for PSL final in Lahore satisfactory.

Shehreyar further added that during the ICC meeting, many member states praised the improved security condition in Pakistan as their officials observed the PSL final’s security arrangements first hand.

“Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are also interested in sending their junior teams to Pakistan,” he said.

It bears mentioning that with the exception of Zimbabwe’s tour two years ago, Pakistan have had to play all of their ‘home’ matches outside of the country since a 2009 terror attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.
