TOKYO – Sacrificing her royal status just for love, Japan’s Princess Mako has publicly declared her engagement to a common man.
Twenty five-year-old Princess Mako, who is the eldest child of Prince Fumihito, made this announcement along with her fiancé, Kei Komuro, in a live presser on television on Sunday.
In Japan, female members of imperial family have to lose their status upon choosing a commoner for marriage under a controversial rule, whereas male members are exempted from it.
Announcing her engagement, Princes said that she felt “really happy” despite losing the royal status for Komuro, whose smile what she described look “like the sun”.
“I was aware since my childhood that I’ll leave a royal status once I marry,” Princess Mako said. “While I worked to help the emperor and fulfill duties as a royal family member as much as I can, I’ve been cherishing my own life.”
Kei Komuro, Princess Mako’s fiance, described her as someone who quietly watches over him “like the moon”.
According to BBC News, Kei Komuro, is a 25-year-old young man who works in a law firm and met to the princes while studying at the same university.
The announcement was originally expected in July, but was not made due to a rain disaster in the country. Both lover would tie knot next year after summers.
