NEW DELHI – A senior army officer has been arrested following his alleged involvement in the murder of a journalist, who was gunned down while investigating allegations of corruption against him.
As per reports, a junior officer on Tuesday allegedly killed reporter Sudip Dutta Bhaumik when he reached a paramilitary base in Tripura to investigate a story.
Tapan Debbarma, the commandant of the Second Tripura State Rifles, was taken into custody by Indian police on Wednesday on charges he issued orders to his junior for killing the journalist. His guard Nandu Reang was arrested on Tuesday.
Bhaumik’s editor Subal Kumar Dey claimed that he had been murdered in the backdrop of articles the journalist had written.
Bhaumik was the third journalist killed an as many months in the country, while a body of journalists claimed that around 41 reporters have been killed since the 1990s.
In Tripura, the editorial pages of newspapers went blank in protest.
