LAHORE (Staff Report) – The 51st birth anniversary of pop music singer and songwriter, Nazia Hassan is being observed on Sunday (today).
Pop queen Nazia Hassan was born on this day in 1965 and debuted into the music by introducing the disco genre with Aap Jaisa Koi song and Disco Deewane hit songs.
Her debut album Disco Deewane (1981) also charted in fourteen countries worldwide and became the best-selling Asian pop record up until that time.
In 1988, along with her brother Zohaib Hassan, they hosted the first-ever pop-music stage show, Music ’89, produced by Shoaib Mansoor. They went on to sell over 60 million records worldwide
She received numerous national and international awards, and at the age of 15 became the first Pakistani to win the Filmfare Award and remains the youngest recipient of the award till date.
Nazia Hassan was also a recipient of Pakistan’s highest civilian award, Pride of Performance. She was appointed by UNICEF as it’s goodwill ambassador for Children’s Rights in 1991.
Nazia Hassan died of lung cancer in London on 13 August in 2000 at the age of 35.
