KARACHI – Rights activist-turned-politician Jibran Nasir might be attempting to play up a recent incident involving the convoy of a high court judge, to gain public sympathy ahead of elections, a police official has alleged.
According to District South SSP Omar Shahid Hamid, police investigators are investigating the alleged beating of Jibran Nasir by the security escort of a Sindh High Court judge Faisal Kamal, suggesting that it was an incident of ‘road rage’ as per the preliminary findings launched after receiving two complaints – one from Jibran Nasir and the other from the judge’s escort.
“The escort has been provided to the judge according to law which reacted after Nasir blocked the vehicle of the judge, who is already facing terror threats.” said the senior police officer.
He continued that the judge was sitting in the vehicle when the incident took place; the judge later asked the escort to release Nasir after identification.

“It was not a matter of VIP protocol but of security threats,” he added.
Hamid shared that it could be wrong if some feudal or the judge’s family were sitting in the vehicle and the escort had done the same.
The senior policeman claimed that since Nasir had no serious injuries like a fracture and open wounds, therefore there was no need to provide him with a letter for a medico-legal report.
On the other hand, Nasir, a candidate of NA-247, expressed his anger over the police findings and claimed that he was not doing this for publicity and it has no links with the electioneering.
‘False allegations are being levelled against me. The police officers who believe it was an incident of road rage should be ashamed,’ he expressed in despair.
Nasir also demanded the release of a CCTV footage of the incident, warning that if the police fail to collect evidence, he will do it himself to clear everything.
“The trial of the judge and me should be conducted to prove who is right and who is wrong if the police believe that it was not a matter of VIP culture,” asserted the lawyer.
Jibran Nasir was beaten up by the judge’s protocol and detained by police on Monday evening for “refusing to give way to the judge’s security protocol” in Pakistan’s sprawling Southern metropolis, Karachi.

The incident happened on Khaleequzaman Road near Karachi Club and most of the incident was live-streamed by Nasir on Facebook.
A day earlier, a policeman had released a video asserting that Nasir was continuously filming the convoy and was tailgating it, that led to his brief detention.
