ISLAMABAD – A fine of Rs1 million each has been imposed on five battery manufacturing companies for concealing information about their products from customers.
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) fined the firms for violating section 10 of the Competition Act 2010 on a complaint, stating that the manufacturers were not writing necessary information about their dry and acid-lead batteries on packaging, warranty cards and body.
In an enquiry, the Commission, which is mandated to ensure free competition activity in the market, found that Atlas Battery, Exide Pakistan, Pakistan Accumulators, Millat Industrial Products and Century Engineering Industries were not following the rules. Lack of details about the products makes consumer unable to select a suitable item.
The CCP orders said that the companies not only deceived the consumers but also posed challenges to fair competition in the market by hiding the important information.
After the violator firms confessed to concealing key information and assured the Commission to print the capacity and other characteristics on batteries body, packaging and warranty cards.
The CCP, following their commitments, did not take stern action and imposed a minimum fine of Rs1 million each on the five firms.
