LAHORE – A retired sub-inspector of Punjab Police has been arrested by Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) for having illegal assets worth Rs1 billion.
An investigation by ACE revealed that former sub-inspector Rafique Ahmad, who seems to be a religious person, amassed property valued in crores through illegal cultivation and corrupt activities during his posting in the Rahim Yar Khan katcha area.
An FIR has been registered against him for corruption and abusing his authority during the service in the Katcha region – a vast region covering Punjab and Sindh and is known for base of criminal gangs operating in the riverine areas.
Anti corruption inquiry further uncovered that Rafique illegally cultivated nearly 1500 kanals of land. In 2018, he is said to have misused his position to take control of 1,384 kanals of waqf land tied to Hazrat Khwaja Ghulam Fareed and cultivated it with help of other culprits.
It turned out that the accused got unclaimed properties in his son’s name, including a one-kanal plot in Mohalla Islamnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and four kanals of land worth millions in Katchi Zaman.
Furthermore, he allegedly invested illegally earned income in benami properties and purchased four luxury vehicles. Initial findings suggest that Ahmad raked in over Rs1 billion from these illegal activities.
ACE Director General Sohail Zafar Chattha instructed officers to act impartially in tackling corruption and has assessed their performance across Punjab.
