SRINAGAR – The first death anniversary of the Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani is being observed in both parts of Kashmir today (Saturday).

The situation of the restive region is already tense as scores of Kashmiris have planned rallies to pay homage to their leader who became a symbol of resistance in the face of brutality.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a complete strike will be observed today to commemorate the anniversary of Burhan Muzaffar Wani.

The strike is part of a week-long programme to pay tributes to the martyred leader, call for which has been given by the joint resistance leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. They have appealed to the people to hold rallies at all district headquarters and elsewhere in the world where Kashmiris are residing.

On the other hand, Indian authorities, who are hell bent to keep the disputed region glued to their territory defying UN resolutions have deployed over 20,000 additional troops and blocked roads with barbed wires.

They have also suspended mobile and Internet services. Curfew and other restrictions have been imposed particularly in central and south districts of the territory.

Meanwhile, all roads leading to Tral, the hometown of Burhan Wani, have been sealed and town has been placed under a strict curfew to thwart a big rally. The Kashmir University has postponed its examinations to be started from tomorrow.

The authorities the ave impounded thousands of bikes and motorbikes in Pulwama, Islamabad, Kulgam, Shopian and Srinagar districts. The move is aimed at preventing the youth from participating in rallies during the weeklong protest programmes.

On the other hand, the occupation authorities did not allow the third consecutive Friday prayers at Kashmir’s historic Jamia Masjid, Srinagar. All the gates of the mosque were locked to stop thousands of devotees from offering the weekly congregational prayers.

Burhan Wani’s Martyrdom

Burhan Wani, a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen famous for appearing on social media in military fatigues to attract young people to join the fight against Indian forces, was martyred in southern Kashmir on July 8 last year.

His martyrdom ignited widespread protests across the Kashmir valley with furious locals demanding an end to a spree of hostility and oppression from Indian forces.

The protests followed by the martyrdom turned violent and in a span of few weeks, as many as 100 Kashmiris were killed by occupying forces, without paying no heed to the calls from the international community.

Burhan was the son of a headmaster and excelled at school before he left it at the age of 15 to join the region’s largest rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen. He was reportedly a budding cricketer as well.

After years of proving his mettle on battleground Wani became the most senior Hizbul Mujahideen commander in the Kashmir Valley, by the tender age of 21.

In his last video statement on July 8, Wani urged Kashmiri police officers to stop supporting the “Indian occupation” and to join the struggle for “freedom”.

Wani’s father has said that his son took the decision to join the armed resistance after he and his brother were stopped by Indian forces on their way home, only to be “assaulted and humiliated.”

“Our young pick up guns because of the daily humiliation and torture they face here,” Muzaffar Wani told AFP in 2014.

“My son is not the first one. But if he dies for his self-respect and his people, he will be a martyr.” he explained.

Wani featured in videos and photos posing with weapons and taunting security forces, which were circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp in an attempt to recruit young Kashmiri men.
