UNITED NATIONS – Pakistan firmly opposes the creation of new permanent seats in the Security Council of the world body, Ambassador to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi has said.
Dr Lodhi was addressing the UN General Assembly session on Security Council Reforms. She termed the creation of new permanent seats the antithesis of principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
However, the Pakistani envoy to UN said that Pakistan supports expansion of non-permanent seats in the Security Council to make it more democratic, accountable, transparent and effective.
The permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, also known as the Permanent Five, Big Five, or P5, include the following five governments: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The members represent the five great powers considered the victors of World War II.
Pakistan’s nuclear-armed neighbor India has also been seeking a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council as a member of the G4, an organization composed of Brazil, Germany, Japan, and India, all who are currently seeking permanent representation.
