Kasuri says Zainab's killer arrested, CJP's spokesperson denies
LAHORE - The main suspect in the Zainab's rape-murder case has been taken into custody, a prominent lawyer claimed on Thursday.

Ahmad Raza Kasuri maintained he was told by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar that the alleged rapist-killer - a relative of the victim's family - was apprehended by the authorities.

Talking to the media, the lawyer-politician shared the development at his recent meeting with the CJP in which Mr Kasuri appeared as a resident of the Punjab district.

"The Chief Justice shared the good news with me that the prime suspect has been arrested after being identified from CCTV footage," Mr Kasuri said, adding that the CJP was informed about the arrest by the security agencies.

However, his claim was immediately rejected by the Supreme Court spokesperson, who said Mr Kasuri took the CJP's words out of context.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan had told Mr Kasuri that there were reports of the killer's arrest on social media but he didn't make any such statement as claimed by the lawyer-politician, the spokesperson clarified.

Zainab, 7, was raped and killed in Kasur, days after she went missing from home. Her body was found in a heap of garbage five days after she was abducted when she was on her way to Holy Quran class.

After the incident, police sent the dead body to a hospital for postmortem. Initial reports revealed that the girl was raped multiple times.

Her parents were performing Umrah and reached their house Wednesday evening to bury their child.

The child's death sparked widespread protests across the city, turning violent after police used firepower to disperse them. Two protesters were killed while another two were wounded by gunshots.
