Say goodbye to 30 years old Suzuki Mehran VX

KARACHI – Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited (PSMCL) has announced to discontinue Pakistan’s most favorite car Mehran’s VX model from November 30.

The decision was made due to its thin demand as compared to the hot-selling VXR model.

The auto manufacturer has sent a notification in this regard to its vendors and dealerships which read as follow:

“Dear, valued vendor(s), Management of PSMCL has decided to discontinue its Model SB308 only version VX(Mehran) from end November 2018.”

“In view of above, it is important to note that all the respective local parts should be produced and supply according to schedules to be sent to you on monthly basis for remaining production plan of 6734 units to be produced from June 2018 to End November 2018,” the notification further reads.

VX is the base model and has minimum features and the company is only discontinuing the production of VX model, VXR is to remain in production until further notice. Mehran VX is priced at PKR 739,000 whereas Mehran VXR is priced at PKR 795,000.

Mehran had replaced Suzuki FX model in 1988 and since then the company only made minor cosmetic changes in the model rather than completely changing the overall look and model of Mehran. In 2012, Pak Suzuki upgraded all vehicles including Mehran to Euro II (Electronically controlled fuel injector) technology.

According to Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), the overall production of Mehran in 1995-1996 stood at 8,966 units which in 2016-2017 reached 38,311 units. In July-May 2017-2018, production hit 43,896 units. Only Mehran had achieved 72 percent localisation in its 30 years journey as compared to other locally assembled cars making it competitive in terms of price with other locally assembled cars.

PSMCL has requested its vendors to carry out effective material and production management for smooth production of remaining vehicles and to avoid any surplus inventory at either end at the time of model discontinuation. At the same time, the company has asked vendors to continue supplying parts to meet spare parts requirement.
