WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday made a telephone call to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and invited him to the White House.
“President Trump has extended an official invitation to President Abbas to visit the White House soon to discuss ways to resume the political process, stressing his commitment to a peace process that will lead to a real peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis,” said Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdainah.
White House spokesman Sean Spicer in Washington also confirmed that Trump had invited Abbas to a meeting at the White House very soon.
According to a senior Palestinian official, the first telephonic contact between president trump and Abbas was positive and lasted for around 10 minutes.
The Palestinian ambassador to Washington, Maen Ariekat, said following the call: ‘We hope that this conversation will signal the start of a constructive and fruitful engagement between the two sides. The Palestinian side stands ready to work with the United States to advance the cause of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East that would lead to an end to the Israeli military occupation and the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state that lives side-by-side with Israel in peace and security.’
It may be mentioned here that Donald Trump backed Israeli premier Netanyahu regarding settlements in disputed territory thus trumpeting the arrival of tough days for Palestine.
Netanyahu also met Trump in Washington last month where both exchanged views regarding the lon-standing Palestine-Israel conflict.
The latest contact between Trump and Abbas suggests something good for the already oppressed people of Palestine.
