Fazlur Rehman declares JUI-F will stay in opposition

ISLAMABAD – The head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has announced that JUI is and will remain part of the opposition.

Former federal minister Muhammad Ali Durrani met Maulana Fazlur Rehman. According to media reports, the meeting took place at Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s residence and continued late into the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, during which political matters and future strategies were discussed.

Muhammad Ali Durrani briefed Maulana Fazlur Rehman on his political engagements. On this occasion, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that JUI is part of the opposition and will remain so, adding that the government will not be able to secure the support of any opposition party for legislation that contradicts the Constitution and democracy.

He further said that the existence of the government and its actions are against the interests of the people. Supporting such a government is tantamount to inviting the wrath of the public. “We only want the authority that the people have given us,” he added.

Durrani commented to Maulana Fazlur Rehman, “You are on the right side of history. You have always upheld political traditions and democratic values.”

It is worth noting that in recent days, President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Maulana Fazlur Rehman. The prime minister had expressed confidence that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would reject the politics of the disruptive elements, and the government would strive to address his concerns.

Following this, JUI sources revealed that the government delegation had offered JUI four ministries in the federal government and a role in the Balochistan government, but Maulana Fazlur Rehman maintained that JUI was overlooked prior to the formation of the government.
