NEW DELHI – As Indian Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj unleashed policy to go out of its way for saving RAW agent Kulbhushan Jadhav from death sentence, speculations are rife as to who would become the agent’s lawyer to save him from gallows.
A report published in Hindustan times suggests that Pakistan’s top notch lawyers including Aitzaz Ahsan,Ansar Burney, Asma Jahangir and Jibran Nasir can be hired by India to represent Jadhav as per the opinion of experts.
Aitzaz Ahsan who is also a senator is considered a veteran lawyer and he remained president of the Supreme Court bar association. Not only that, he also defended the then suspended chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
Asma Jahangir is a former president of the Pakistani Supreme Court bar association and a renowned human rights activist. She is also considered a blatant voice when it comes to protecting rights of minorities.
Ansar Burney is a seasoned lawyer and activist. Burney is also a former federal minister for human rights and has worked with the United Nations. He has worked prominently on rights of prisoners and most importantly he helped Kashmir Singh, another Indian spy to get back to his home after spending 3 years in prison.
Jibran Nasir is a young lawyer who openly slams state policies regarding banned outfits and emphasizes the need for protection of minorities in Pakistan.
Neither the report by leading Indian paper quotes official source, nor the above mentioned lawyers have expressed their willingness or reluctance to help RAW agent get off the hook.
