CJP conducts first-ever weekend proceedings

KARACHI – Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar is conducting hearing today (Sunday) at the Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry regarding matters of public interest.

The cases which would be scrutinized relate to non-supply of potable drinking water and deteriorating sanitation conditions and its impact on environment and this is the first time that the court was conducting hearing on a weekend.

The three-judge bench, headed by the CJP, will also include Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah.

In its previous hearings, the chief justice had expressed grave concern over the poor state of administrative affairs in the province and criticised the authorities for their failure to provide clean drinking water and improving sanitation conditions across the province.

The case regarding the provision of safe drinking water seems to be of extraordinary importance for the top judge as he had summoned the Chief Minister Sindh for explaining his position regarding water quality in the province.

The apex court had also grilled Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah after his government failed to give satisfactory answers on the time-frame to complete water and sanitation development schemes.
