Tokyo Governor resigns over spending scandal

TOKYO (Web Desk) – The governor of Tokyo has said he will step down over a spending scandal on Wednesday.

Governor Yoichi Masuzoe has faced severe criticism over allegations that he used government funds to pay for art, holidays and comic books for his children, the BBC reported.

Masuzoe was expected to lose a no-confidence vote in the Japanese capital’s assembly later.

In April 2016,  it was revealed that Masuzoe was using his official vehicle to be driven to a weekend cottage south of the Japanese capital.

Further allegations later emerged of excessive spending on official trips, lavish family outings and expensive clothing.

The scandal could be potentially damaging to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) chances to win in the upcoming 10 July polls for Japan’s upper house of parliament.
