OTTAWA – Canada and India are embroiled in a diplomatic crisis due to Indian diplomat’s engagement in assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Nijjar, a staunch supporter of Khalistan, was killed outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, in mid-2023. Canada accused Indian government of his gruesome murder.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned India’s actions, asserting Canada would not tolerate foreign threats against its citizens. Canada identified six individuals as persons of interest in the Nijjar case and requested India to waive their diplomatic immunity, which Modi led government refused.
In latest development, two sides expelled top diplomats amid escalating tensions over the assassination of Nijjar as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that credible evidence suggests Indian agents were involved in the killing, leading to accusations of homicides and violence against supporters of the pro-Khalistan movement.
New Delhi called it politically motivated case, and summoned Canada’s acting High Commissioner for clarification.
