Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan resigns as Gilgit-Baltistan Governor

GILGIT –The president of Pakistan has accepted the resignation of Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan, the governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, Radio Pakistan reported on Saturday.

Khan assumed the role of governor in November 2015 and was appointed by former President Mamnoon Hussain. He was elected a member of the GB Assembly from Hunza constituency in the June 8, 2015 election.

After becoming governor, he had vacated his GB Assembly’s seat which was later won by his son, Mir Saleem Khan, in a by-poll.

Khan had forwarded his resignation to President Arif Alvi on Friday.

He contested elections several times from his hometown of Karimabad in Hunza and was returned five times as a member of the GB Assembly.

Ghazanfar Khan has also served as the GB’s chief executive from 2004 to 2009 during the regime of former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf.

The region is presently ruled by the PML-N government and the GB assembly’s term will end in 2020.

The federal government led by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has reportedly tipped Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon for the constitutional post.

According to the GB Order 2018, a person selected for the post of GB governor should be a local resident.
