Pakistan to take necessary steps against blasphemers: Nisar

ISLAMABAD – Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar said on Thursday that Pakistan will take the fight to any extent necessary against those involved in uploading blasphemous content on social media.

Addressing a press conference, he said: “Blasphemous content has been posted on social media websites for years,” adding that unity among Muslim countries is needed to give a strong message to such websites and rest of the world.

He said that uploading blasphemous content is justified as freedom of speech, asking, “Is it freedom of expression or a conspiracy against Islam?”

The minister said that Facebook authorities have been urged to provide the names of those involved in publishing such content by exploiting freedom of expression. He added that stern actions will be carried out against such activities whether Facebook provides data or not.

He said love and respect for Prophet (PBUH) is part of our faith, adding that people involved in such practices will be brought to a logical end.

The minister added that Foreign Office has been asked to appoint a person in the US to remain in contact with social media websites on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency has traced the suspects behind the ‘blasphemous’ content being uploaded on social media.

The main suspect escaped to Sweden on January 30, 2015 from Lahore and has been uploading ‘blasphemous’ videos and material from there, the FIA investigation report revealed.

The report further mentioned that the suspect is the leader of an 11-member gang that has facilitators in Pakistan.
