In a significant move to modernize the education system, the Sindh government has officially introduced a new grading policy for Matric and Intermediate exams. Under this new system, students will no longer be awarded marks or ranked by position; instead, they will receive grades based on their performance. With this decision, Sindh becomes the first province in Pakistan to adopt such a policy.
According to the notification issued by Abbas Baloch, Secretary of Boards and Universities, the new grading policy will be implemented starting in 2025. The policy replaces the traditional ranking system, which awarded first, second, and third positions, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) format.
The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) has established a grading formula under which students achieving 95% or higher will receive an A+ (Exceptional) grade, while those scoring 90% will get an A (Excellent), and 85% will be awarded an A- (Very Good). The grading system continues with 80% earning a B+ (Good), 75% receiving a B (Above Average), and 70% a B- (Fair). Scores of 60% will be assigned a C (Satisfactory), 50% a D (Average), and 40–49% an E (Below Average). Students scoring below 40% will be given a U (Unsatisfactory).
Dr. Ghulam Ali Mallah also announced that the passing marks for Matric and Intermediate exams will be raised from 33% to 40% starting next year.
Currently, other provinces, including Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, have yet to adopt the new grading policy.
