Fatima Bhutto slams British writer Richard Dawkins for calling Azaan aggressive

KARACHI – Acclaimed British scientist and writer Richard Dawkins faced a severe backlash on social media after it shared a tweet calling Azaan, the Muslim call to prayer, aggressive.

The biologist shared a picture of himself in front of a cathedral, comparing the sound of the church bells to the Azaan.

He wrote, “Listening to the lovely bells of Winchester, one of our great mediaeval cathedrals. So much nicer than the aggressive-sounding Allahu Akbar. Or is that just my cultural upbringing?”

After the post, several people around the globe, including Pakistan’s renowned writer Fatima Bhutto, called him out for his intolerant views.

The 36-year-old writer, who is the granddaughter of slain Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, slammed Dawkins with a short but effective statement: “No, it’s your bigotry.”

Other social media users also followed the suit and slammed the British writer for the wrong interpretation.
