NAB to challenge IHC s suspension of Avenfield reference conviction

ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau has decided to file an appeal against the Islamabad High Court’s verdict which suspended the conviction of former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar in the Avenfield reference.

The NAB chief, Justice (r) Javed Iqbal chaired a high-level meeting of the accountability watchdog at its Islamabad office on Wednesday and decided to file an appeal in the supreme court against the decision of the Islamabad High Court.

The Islamabad High Court announced its verdict on a slew of petitions filed by the members of the Sharif family against their conviction in the Avenfield reference – a graft case initiated by the National Accountability Bureau.

Justice Athar Minallah of the IHC ordered the release of the accused from the Adiala Jail after submitting a surety bond worth Rs 0.5 million.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in jail, his daughter Maryam was sentenced to seven years while son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar was sentenced to one year in prison by the accountability court Judge Muhammad Bashir on July 6.

They accused were imprisoned in the Adiala jail after Nawaz Sharif and his daughter returned to the country from London.

Following the suspension, Nawaz, Maryam and Capt Safdar will be released from Adiala jail after completion of legal formalities today.
