China willing to play positive role in normalising Pakistan-India ties

BEIJING – Chian has hailed peace-filled intentions expressed by Pakistan and India to resolve the disputes, including the Kashmir issue, through talks.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang at a regular press briefing in Beijing said that being a common neighbour China was willing to play a constructive role in improved ties between Pakistan and India.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said at a regular press briefing in Beijing, “We have noticed relevant reports and welcomed the positive attitude of the Pakistani and Indian leaders in improving bilateral relations.”

“Both Pakistan and India are important countries in South Asia. The improvement and development of their bilateral ties are very important to regional peace, stability and prosperity,” he added.

“As a neighbour to both Pakistan and India, China sincerely hopes that the two sides could enhance dialogue, increase mutual trust, properly handle and resolve differences, and make joint contributions to regional peace and development,” Kang added.

The offer of playing a mediator role from China comes as Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said, “To move forward, Pakistan and India must have a dialogue and resolve their conflicts including Kashmir.”

He further said, “The best way to alleviate poverty and uplift the people of the subcontinent is to resolve our differences through dialogue and start trading.”

In his first address to nation after assuming the office, Khan said Pakistan will work to have “best relations” with all its neighbours and hold dialogues to settle the issues as without it peace cannot be ensured in the region.

Earlier, in his victory speech on July 26, Khan had said Pakistan is ready to improve its relations with India. “If they take one step towards us, we will take two, but at least (we) need a start,” he had said.

PM Modi earlier sent a letter to his Pakistani counterpart. In the first official communication with the new administration in Islamabad, Modi called for building good neighbourly ties for security and prosperity in the region.
