Donald Trump dims hopes about historic meeting with North Korean Kim

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of a delay in his planned meeting with North Korean leader, Kim Jong un, who had agreed to call on the US leader, a few months back.

Trump’s comments came during his interaction with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday; Moon had landed in US capital to cajole Trump, not to retreat from the planned summit, scheduled on June 12th in Singapore.

“There’s a very substantial chance … it wont work out. And thats ok, that doesn’t mean it wont work out over a period of time. But it may not work out for June 12. But there is a good chance that we will have the meeting.” Trump told reporters.

To a query whether the meeting will be held as scheduled, the US leader replied that it will be determined “pretty soon”.

“North Korea has a chance to be a great country and I think they should seize the opportunity,” he observed.

The meeting between Trump and his North Korean counterpart was finalized a few weeks back after then CIA director Mike Pompeo landed in Pyongyang to discuss the prospects of the historic summit.

In an unprecedented development, North Korean leader also crossed the Southern border last month and announced denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

However, the detente apparently died last week when Pyongyang suspended talks with South, in the pretext of joint military exercises, it was conducting with the US, named Max Thunder.

North Korea’s First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kim Kye Gwan was quoted as saying that the country never had any expectation of US support in carrying out economic construction and ‘will not make such a deal in future’.

“The United States will also have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-US summit in light of this provocative military ruckus jointly conducted with the South Korean authorities,” the KCNA report said.
