Nawaz Sharif finds Musharraf treason case as core cause of his legal troubles

ISLAMABAD – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif expressed on Wednesday that the legal cases against him were punishment for his pursuit of a treason case against the former president, Pervez Musharraf.

In an explosive press conference in Punjab House, the supreme leader of ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz stated that it was not easy to bring a former military dictator to court adding that no law could place a dictator in handcuffs.

“I have great respect for the armed forces of Pakistan,” he asserted.

The 68-year-old leader said that the power comes in the hands of a few military officers but its cost is paid by the entire army.

Sharif continued that he recognised the services of the soldiers who laid down their lives.

The elder Sharif said that it was no more a secret that how the 2014 sit-in project was orchestrated, who supported the protesters for four months and who made them demand the resignation of Nawaz Sharif.

He claimed that the purpose of the 2014 sit-in was to pressurise him as the planners thought that he would succumb to their demands.

The former chief executive also referred to the statements of hsi arch-rival, Imran Khan regarding the players behind the 2014 sit-ins.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan “himself spoke of the umpire’s finger being raised,” Nawaz said. “Who was the umpire?” he asked.

“I want to bring on record why the Avenfield reference was filed against me,” he said in his interaction with media.

He declared that hollow cases had been filed against him following Panama Papers, in which he was not even named.

“I have never been allowed to complete a constitutional term,” decried the ousted premier.

He observed that the reason for his removal and unfounded, malicious allegations against him was that he had refused to obey the orders.

The former lawmaker continued that former president Asif Ali Zardari conveyed a message to validate Musharraf’s second martial law imposed in November 2007, however, hastened to add that he refused to endorse the martial law.

“I have said this before and will say it again, decisions should be taken by the people.”

Earlier today, in his testimony for the third consecutive day in Avenfield reference, Nawaz had said the reference was filed against him as a reciprocal punishment for taking legal action against Musharraf despite being warned not to do so.

“When Musharraf left for the court in 2014 he directly went to the hospital as it was decided pre-planned. Musharraf pretended to be sick and avoided the case hearings,” Nawaz said, adding the judges failed to send Musharraf behind bars for even one hour.

In a spree of shocking revelations, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif claimed that a message from the head of an intelligence agency was conveyed to him during 2014 sit-ins that he should resign or go on an extended leave.

Without sharing the name of the intelligence agency, Nawaz said he went upset when he received the message from an employee of an institution directly worked under the prime minister.

Explaining the situation, the former premier recalled: “I met Imran Khan at his Bani Gala residence with two of my friends in March 2014, just two months before the sit-in. The meeting was held in a pleasant atmosphere and Khan neither talked about any sort of rigging in elections nor hinted at any protest”.
