LAHORE – Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday informed eminent lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan that a Rs10,000 fine imposed by the Supreme Court on him for his absence in formula milk case has been paid by CJP’s son.
The chief justice while hearing the suo motu case regarding formula milk at the SC registry in Lahore, the chief justice remarked his son had paid the fine as “Sadqah” as Ahsan was reluctant to pay it.
“My son said I will pay Aitzaz uncle’s fine,” Express Tribune quoted CJP. The top judge also ordered court staff to hand over the fine receipt to Ahsan.
On March 9, the apex court imposed the fine on senior lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan, counsel for Meiji Formula Milk Company, after the chief justice irked over the demand of Ahsan’s assistant to adjourn the case for an unreasonably long time.
Following the fine, Aitaza Ahsan had said that the court order dented his reputation as he had never been slapped fine during his entire career.
To which, the chief justice said he can pay the fine on his behalf.
During the today’s hearing, Ahsan said a disclaimer that the formula milk was intended for child above the age of six months and that the mother’s milk was better for babies, following the court orders.
The chief justice remarked that the court had ordered to not use the word ‘milk’ on the packaging, adding that the company must use word ‘formula’. He observed that formula is not natural milk.
However, Ahsan maintained that the disclaimer on the package did not claim it to be milk.
