KokoKorina: Is there no line between criticism and bullying?

Before I make my point let’s go through a quick recap. Past week has been embarrassing and somewhat fun for the entertainment industry in Pakistan. the remake of Koko Korina by Coke Studio made many headlines – all for the wrong reasons. Social media users were quick to give reaction to the song, what most of them agreed to be a disaster. There was a tweet from Minister of Human Rights, Ms Shireen Mazari which quickly turned into an argument between Mizari and Momina. Both decided that they won’t budge and the result was a series of Tweets we all have seen. Ahad’s rant on Twitter also grabbed the attention of many.

While Ms Mazari had every right to criticize the Coke Studio’s version and Momina was on the fault to bring ministry into, there is one thing latter was absolutely right about – bullying/cyberbullying. There is a fine line between criticising a piece of art and bullying someone for their choices, the way they look and act. unfortunately, many of us blurred that line and what we called criticism actually turned out to be bullying.

Sure we didn’t like the new version of Koko Korina and we had a lot of expectations, sure we had every right to criticize it BUT we had NO RIGHT to call Momina Mustehsan ugly, or comment on the way she looks.

We talk about what’s wrong with society all the time, we talk about how the standards we have set for beauty are unreal, we talk about how many girls go through pain and trauma because of constant pressure to act and look a certain way and yet the first chance we got to give healthy criticism we went crazy and deviated towards destructive criticism.

We did everything, we usually advocate against.

I didn’t like the cover, I think it’s a disaster but based on this song I can’t say that Momina and Ahad don’t have potential, I can’t say that they are ugly and I absolutely can’t bully them. There is a difference between healthy criticism and bullying and dear readers, this time we blurred that line.
