Rotten, 40-year-old meat seized from meat peddlers in China

BEIJING (Web Desk) – Chinese authorities have seized 800 tonnes of smuggled frozen meat from meat peddlers, including one batch dating from the 1970s.

The meat was suppose to be sold at restaurants retailers and supermarkets in Hunan province, and other cities of China, CNN reported.

The seized meat included poultry and beef and was reported to be worth $1.6 million.

The confiscated packages contain rotten meat that were around 40 years old. The date on the stamped packages coincided with China’s Cultural Revolution.

Chinese officials said some of the beef was from India and passed through Guangxi, a southern region bordering Vietnam.

China has been in news  for a string of stomach-churning food scandals in recent years.

The most high-profile case involved a US owned meat factory operating in China that was accused of selling out-of-date and rotten meat to clients including McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC and Pizza Hut chains.
