Indonesia to execute Pakistani man despite allegations of unfair trial

JAKARTA – A Pakistani drug convict will be executed in Indonesia, an embassy official in Jakarta said on Tuesday, as part of a round of executions on Friday.

The convicts scheduled for execution  include a 52-year old Pakistani drug convict, Zulfiqar Ali, who was transferred on Monday to the Nusakambangan prison island off Java, where executions take place.

Indonesian authorities have informed Pakistani officials that Ali’s execution is close.

Rights groups including Amnesty International have expressed serious concerns about Ali’s conviction, alleging it arose out of beatings and torture and that he did not have a fair trial.

Indonesian authorities are preparing to execute by firing squad at least other three foreign prisoners, including citizens of Nigeria and Zimbabwe. They are among 16 prisoners who Indonesian officials have said are to be executed this year
