HAVANA – Fidel Castro, Cuba’s former president and leader of the Communist revolution, has passed away at the age of 90.
Castro died on Friday at 7pm local time, Cuban television said. He was president of the Caribbean island for more than 30 years before handing over power to his brother Raul in 2008.
Born in 1926, Castro and his forces began a campaign of guerrilla warfare to successfully overthrow Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1956 as Castro became the country’s new leader.
He was sworn in as Prime Minister of Cuba in 1956 and served in this capacity till 1976. The same year he became president of country and remained in office till 2008.
Castro survived a number of US-backed assassination plots, as well as numerous media reports throughout the years that claimed he was dead or nearly there.
But Castro, who four years ago vowed he didn’t ‘even remember what a headache is’, remained active even in his final months.
