Salah is a dual US-Saudi citizen and his passport was blocked last year apaprently to ramp up pressure on his father to return to the kingdom.

There was no immediate comment from Saudi officials but Ms Whitson said the family were apparently allowed to leave after a travel ban on Salah was lifted.

Jamal Khashoggi’s son recently met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh and shared a stern handshake with the powerful heir at the city’s Yamama Palace.

The Turkish government had earlier claimed that the Washington Post journalist was killed in a pre-planned manner and it was no accident.

President Erdogan also announced that there will be a thorough probe into the incident, calling upon the international community that the trial should be conducted in Turkey.
