WASHINGTON – The US Senate approved the appointment of former CIA director Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, who would be replacing Rex Tillerson to pursue the policy of ‘America first’ under Trump’s chair.
Pompeo was confirmed by the entire body in a vote of 57-42, with seven Democrats voting in favour of his escalation to the top slot. The appointment came a day earlier than scheduled as the new secretary of state would be attending Friday meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.
Pompeo’s next task is to arrange a meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the coming months.

Pompeo’s recent ‘victory’ was a landmark meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong UN, which was kept secret, however, photos confirming the visit have been released now.
Mike Pompeo earned Trump’s confidence after serving for a year at the CIA, but the Democrats accuse him of harbouring anti-Muslim and homophobic sentiments.
Earlier, last month, Rex Tillerson, was sacked after a year of tension in the State Department.
Thanking Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Trump said the new state secretary would do “a fantastic job”.
