Arnold Schwarzenegger promises to visit Pakistan as climate change battle rages on

WASHINGTON – Prime Minister’s Advisor for Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam has announced that former California Governor and Hollywood superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger has promised to come to Pakistan.

In his tweet on Monday, Aslam stated that Schwarzenegger had promised to travel to Pakistan to highlight the country’s extreme climate vulnerability.

Aslam met Schwarzenegger at the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change taking place in Poland.

The representatives from dozens of countries are in Poland including Aslam as nearly 200 nations that signed up the 2015 Paris climate deal must finalise a rulebook this month to limit global temperature rises to well below two Degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit), and to the safer cap of 1.5C if possible.

With just one Celsius of warming so far, Earth is marred by raging wildfires, extreme drought and mega-storms made worse by rising sea-levels and Pakistan is no exception as it falls at 7th spot in terms of most vulnerable country as per GermanWatch.

In his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the world is “way off course” in its plan to prevent catastrophic climate change.

“Even as we witness devastating climate impacts causing havoc across the world, we are still not doing enough, nor moving fast enough, to prevent irreversible and catastrophic climate disruption,” Guterres said.

Climate Change is one of the key areas of interest of the incumbent government and Prime Minister Imran Khan has for the multiple times stressed the need for afforestation.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also launched a countrywide cleanliness campaign on October 13 as part of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s policy for a clean and green country.

PM Imran launched ‘Plant for Pakistan’ drive under the banner of PTI government’s billion tree Tsunami 2018 drive.

The sitting regime is especially focusing on the issue of environment and climate change as it is one of the non-traditional threat, the country is facing.
