MUMBAI – Acclaimed Indian singer A R Rahman has responded to the criticism he received for ‘his daughter’s face being covered with a veil’ as reported by Hindustan Times.
Rahman’s daughter Khatija recently shared the stage with her father during an event to celebrate 10 years of Slumdog Millionaire. The music of the film gained Rahman two Academy accolades.
Many social media users commented that they had not expected his daughter to be dressed so conservatively, assuming that he had forced her to follow such a dressing style.
Reacting to the matter, the Kun Faya Kun composer on Thursday (yesterday) tweeted a photograph from his handle of his two daughters and wife, posing with Nita Ambani. The hashtag accompanying the picture says #freedomtochoose.
While Khatija is seen wearing a veil in the picture, her sister Raheema and mother Sairaa are not.

The Oscar winner’s daughter Khatija also shared that she was not forced by anyone to cover her face. She took to Facebook to share her thoughts on the matter. Khatija also stated that the veil has nothing to do with her parents.
Here is the post:
Khatija also said, “The veil has been my choice with complete acceptance and honor. I’m a sane mature adult who knows to make my choices in life”. She also shared that everybody has the right to dress according to their choice and that she has been doing the same. Khatija also urged people to not jump to conclusions or judge others without understanding the situation.
A Rahman is a father to three children – Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen. Khatija has also sung for her father in Enthiran.
