WASHINGTON – United States President Joe Biden urged the Israeli government to avoid strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities after massive missile attack by Tehran.
He clarified a day after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel, an operation Biden previously described as “ineffective.” Biden highlighted the need for Tel Aiv to respond to the threat posed by Iran, saying “We’ll be discussing with the Israelis what actions they plan to take”.
The development comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Iran would face repercussions for its aggressive actions, and experts sound alarm about critical attack on nuclear or oil infrastructure in Iran.
Amid the heightened tensions after recent attacks, and death of Hezbollah chief, Washington is expected to intervene to moderate Israel’s response to prevent a broader conflict.
US President further mentioned imposing additional sanctions against Iran and that he would discuss the matter with Israeli government.
Israeli officials are still deliberating on their potential targets and timing for a response. While Israel may choose not to act immediately, there are concerns that delaying retaliation could undermine its deterrent capabilities.
The recent missile assault has escalated tensions in a region where the Biden administration has been working tirelessly to broker a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Israeli military is currently engaged in ongoing skirmishes with Iran-backed Hezbollah forces along its northern border, where recent clashes have resulted in the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers—the deadliest day for Israel’s military in over a year.
