ISLAMABAD – A petition has been filed in the Islamabad High Court demanding the status of Field Marshal for the current Chief of army staff General Raheel Sharif.
The petition, filed by two lawyers, Raja Samiul Haq Satti and Sardar Saleem Khan cites the Prime Minister and the Secretaries of defence and cabinet division as respondents, Dawn reported on Sunday.
Court reserves decision over plea for elevating Gen Raheel to Field Marshal rank
The petition gave details about Gen Sharif and his family, including his elder brother, Major Shabbir Sharif, who was martyred during the 1971 war with India and was awarded the Nishan-i-Haider, which is Pakistan’s highest military award and about his maternal uncle, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti, was also awarded the Nishan-i-Haider during the 1965 war between Indian and Pakistan.
The petition says that General Sharif, whose three-year term will end on November 27, had launched the Zarb-e-Azab operation, which had countered the plans of terrorists and that the operation was still on.
The petition said that Gen Sharif had also monitored the ongoing China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project.
The petition argued that it was a universal and divine law that whosoever rendered services for the nation and humanity “in an extraordinary, exemplary and selfless manner” shall be elevated to the highest level of military hierarchy, Dawn reported.
It requested the court to direct the respondents to elevate Gen Sharif to the rank of Field Marshal.
